Bygones Cocktail Bar

Bygones is a cocktail destination in the Southside neighborhood of Birmingham that specializes in classic and experimental cocktails using regional flavors. Owners Michael Toviyahu-McKenzie and Phillip Crowe were local cocktail heroes before embarking on a five-year journey to build their dream bar. The bar sits in a historic building from 1890 that once served as a farrier's workshop, hence the horseshoe-shaped bar. Rather than focusing on the past visually, we chose to design a system centered around the name itself.

The name derives from the old saying "let bygones be bygones"—an agreement to drop your sword and let go of conflict. To express this idea visually, we transformed the cocktail sword, an iconic element of the cocktail experience, by adding a second handle. This creates both a B monogram and a symbol of two people working together to "drop the sword". This becomes a main feature of the brand and can be found on menus, signage, coasters, and more.

The rest of the branding system maintains a confident and timeless aesthetic, featuring classic cocktail activations like linen-wrapped menu covers, gold-foiled matchbooks, neon and hand-painted signage.
